Lightweight and Umbrella

Umbrella strollers are available in a wide range of prices according to the features offered and will last you well into the early preschool years (3 to 4).
Features may include: Aluminum frames; semi-reclining seat; canopy; one-step fold; locking swivel wheels; super-light body weight.
Age range: If the lightweight stroller reclines fully, it is safe for a newborn. Most umbrella strollers do not fully recline or have suspension features, so it is best to wait until baby is at least 4 to 6 months old before using.

Travel Systems
One of the most convenient innovations in recent years has been the travel system--a stroller and infant car seat in one. The infant car seat provides head, back, and neck support while keeping baby in a comfortable, reclined position, just like in a carriage. With the stay-in-car base feature, the infant car seat can also be used as a carrier. This allows you to take the car seat from the car to stroller and vice versa without ever disturbing baby. Once baby outgrows the infant car seat, it can be removed, converting the system into a stroller. The stroller's own seating and restraint system is used until your child is approximately 4 years old. These strollers are designed to fold quickly, easily, and compactly for storage and offer features that provide a comfortable ride for everyone.
Stroller features may include: Child play tray; parent cup holder; three-point or five-point harness system (not overhead); removable, washable pad; all-terrain, swivel wheels; brakes that set with a foot lever; seat recline; storage basket.
Infant car seat features may include: Canopy; level indicator; ergonomically designed handle; head cushion; stay-in-car base.
Age range: Newborn (for car seat) to toddler (stroller).

Joggers
For active parents who want to include baby in their outings, the jogger stroller's unique design may be just the thing. Many are three-wheeled, complete with comfortable seating, a parking brake, a storage basket, and all-terrain wheels. Joggers are made to fold quickly, easily, and compactly, making them great for travel. Most joggers can hold up to 75 pounds, but it's likely your child will outgrow the seat before then. Also keep in mind (with young babies in particular) that while most jogger models are designed for some bumps along the trail, if you are planning on climbing Mount Kilimanjaro or are traveling over rough and rocky terrain, it's probably best to leave baby at home or try a backpack instead.

Serious road runners should look for smooth tires--the bigger, the better. If you will be running on trails, strolling to a soccer game, etc., then knobby tires, with better traction, are suggested. If you live in a wet climate, invest in an aluminum frame and rims that prevent rusting and is more lightweight. While aluminum is typically more expensive, you'll find that it pays in the long run.
Features may include: All-terrain wheels; wrist strap; hand brake; durable, weatherproof fabric; sturdy construction; adjustable handlebar height; better suspension; storage pouch.
Age range: Most pediatricians recommend waiting until your baby is approximately 6 months of age. Depending on its size, you can use this type of stroller well into the toddler years.

Double and Triple
If you're the parent of multiples or have an infant and toddler in your household, walking them by yourself may sound next to impossible... unless you have a stroller made especially for more than one child. Double and triple strollers offer the convenience of walking multiple children at the same time as comfortably as if you were walking just one. The Grand Tour LX has all of the fluidity of a typical high-end stroller. It’s easy (and, I’ll admit, fun!) to push, has an adjustable handle and it navigates sidewalks and store aisles with ease. It has puncture-proof wheels which I initially worried would sacrifice the quality of the ride but I was pleased to discover that the full suspension more than compensated. And I love the easy-to-use foot-operated brake, as well.

This is perhaps the most striking feature of the Grand Tour LX: You can fold it and un-fold it in a flash. When folded, it stands upright for easy storage and quick access when needed. It’s compact but sturdy and will fit easily in the trunk of a car or tucked behind the front door at home. It’s no umbrella stroller size-wise, to be sure, but it’s still easy to pack and store.

Okay, get ready for it. This stroller comes with almost everything you could ever possibly need in a stroller (and some things you may have never dreamed of!). In addition to things like a cup-holder, rain cover, bug cover, baby carrycot, reflective accents and the famous Maclaren lifetime warranty, the Grand Tour LX also has built-in headlights (seriously), with multiple visibility settings (constant, flashing, colored) which mom or dad can control with a remote control (seriously… again). The remote mounts on the handlebar console which flips open to feature a clock and thermometer. And if that’s not enough, the Grand Tour LX includes an onboard Strollometer® which measures distance by way of an integrated wireless sensor in the wheels.

I know it sounds almost comical but, truth be told, it’s both useful and fun to have these features. They all conspire to ensure mom or dad is safe, fit, and never late! Unfortunately, Maclaren hasn’t yet figured out a way to ensure that baby helps with the same missions…

This stroller is thoroughly impressive. Expensive, yes, but it is a marriage of the ease of a classic umbrella stroller with the style and durability that you would expect in a modern ‘glam’ stroller. It folds and unfolds in a flash, adjusts to the different needs of every parent and child, and is sleek and stylish. It’s an excellent stroller for any age and may just be that one mythical stroller that does it all… and then some!

Putting it Together is really simple — connect the wheels and bumper bar, then snap the side and front fabric panels around the bumper bar.

The Ride: is very similar to the Baby Jogger City Mini stroller. You’re not going to be able to jog or go off-roading with the Ion — but in the city and suburbs, this double front wheeler performs excellently. It’s got a tight turning radius and is perfect for going around in small aisles and spaces. The stroller is low to the ground, but if you use an umbrella stroller already, you’ll instantly feel comfortable with it. Taller parents will appreciate the adjustable handlebar (which has 6 positions). It is very easy to push one handed, while holding packages or onto an older child. The oval handlebar holds a diaper bag.

You can get an adapter to use a Graco, Peg Perego, Maxi-Cosi and Chicco Infant car seats with the Ion. A bassinet (carrycot) option will be available soon.

The seat will hold a child up to 44 lbs. The stroller has a slight recline, but you are able to adjust the seat to be more upright. The bumper bar is a big hit with the babies – they love holding onto it and saying, “Go, go!”

The storage basket is taller and narrower than most baskets. The wire rim is flexible (very bendable) for when you need to take things in and out of it. Since this is a lightweight stroller, use caution in hanging too much weight off the handlebars (any lightweight stroller will tip when overloaded).

The sun canopy is terrific! Unzip it to extend it to its furthest capacity. A rain cover is available at an extra cost.

Folding/unfolding for travel: The fold has two major steps: First, pull back the sun canopy and twist the gray “key” clockwise (on the handle), then push up the red secondary locking latch up and push the stroller forward to fold. You can attach the locking strap to the locking pin. To make it even more compact, take the back wheels off.
To unfold: First, unhook the locking strap. Lift the handle up and the stroller will snap together (the red locking latch will engage automatically).

A rain cover and car seat adapter are available now, with a bassinet coming out soon.

Pros: The fold is simple and perfect for stashing in smaller vehicles/storing in smaller places. You won’t have any trouble navigating smaller store aisles/spaces and the one-handed push is sensational.

Cons: At 18 lbs (with the wheels on), it’s not as lightweight as other strollers.

Verdict: The Ion’s no-fuss fold and effortless push makes it perfect for city and suburb use (and it will perform nicely for long walks). While the Ion isn’t cheap, compared to other Valco Strollers, it is much less expensive.

Side-by-side double strollers seat children next to each other. For steering purposes, these strollers work best with twins or two kids of roughly equal weight. Of the two types of double strollers, side-by-side models maneuver over curbs more easily. In response to parent feedback, manufacturers are making these narrower to fit better through doorways, but side-by-side twin strollers will always be difficult to maneuver through small, crowded aisles.

Most of the models on the market these days are side-by-side double strollers. Parents appreciate that both kids get the same view in this type of stroller (which means less fighting over the front seat). Side-by-side double strollers are usually a better choice for older children, because the seats usually don't recline fully.
Some alternative double strollers put a new spin on twin-stroller design. Some feature the basic design of a single stroller, with a bench for an older child to sit or stand on, while others allow you to attach a second seat above or below the main seat.

Double strollers can be cumbersome to push and fold, but parents say they're indispensable if you have two small children. Experts say it's important to consider both safety and ergonomics in selecting a double stroller.

Tandem, side-by-side and alternative double strollers
Tandem double strollers situate one seat behind the other, and usually the back seat is elevated a bit higher than the front seat. This type of stroller is narrow but very long. The narrow width is great for getting through doors and store aisles, but it's still tough to maneuver around corners.

Side-by-side double strollers position the two seats next to each other, a configuration that works well for twins or for two kids of roughly the same weight. The whole stroller is usually 29 or 30 inches wide -- just small enough to fit through a standard doorway.

In addition, there are quite a few unconventional designs to choose from. Some models look basically like a single stroller, with a rear running board in the back for older kids to stand or sit on. Other designs, notably from phil&teds, have a second drop-down seat under the primary seat. That means that the kid in the lower seat rides pretty close to the ground, but the stroller itself is only about the length and width of a standard stroller.
Here are some general shopping tips for double strollers:

• Look for comfortable handlebars that fit your height. Double strollers are more difficult to push than single strollers, so a comfortable handlebar and handgrip are important. Taller parents will want higher handlebars.

• Be careful when buying a used stroller. Older models may have been recalled, so check with the manufacturer or Consumer Product Safety Commission (www.cpsc.gov). Expensive strollers often have a high resale value, so you can check sites like eBay for deals.
• Look for a five-point harness. A three-point belt (around the waist and between the legs) is less common than a five-point belt (which also goes over the shoulders).
• An upholstered and padded frame offers the best support for the child. Make sure the stroller doesn't tip backwards when light pressure is placed on the handlebars, and check for sturdiness and stability (i.e. a wide wheel base with the seat mounted low and deep within the frame).
• Washable seat padding is best. Better strollers typically have washable upholstery.
• Infants need a fully reclining seat. Infants require reclining seats, because they can't support the weight of their heads and need to be able to lie flat. Reclining seats also allow older children to nap comfortably.
• If you want a side-by-side double stroller, look for a width of less than 30 inches. This will give you a better chance of fitting though doorways and crowded grocery store aisles. Manufacturers are increasingly mindful of this.
• Take a test drive. Double strollers are trickier to push and maneuver than single strollers, especially once you add the weight of two kids. If possible, test-drive a few models before making a decision.

When a high-end baby stroller company recalled about one million strollers Monday after reports children’s fingers were being amputated on the hinges, some parents panicked, and at least one personal-injury lawyer started looking for clients.

Maclaren USA, Inc., a popular British baby buggy company whose strollers typically retail for more than $125, issued a voluntary recall of nine models after receiving 12 reports of children amputating their fingertips on stroller hinges while caretakers were folding or unfolding the strollers.

Even The Law Offices of James Sokolove, known for ubiquitous TV and radio ads offering support to mishap and accident victims, offered victims of stroller-related injuries legal assistance through its Web site and by advertising on Google.

But Sheri Gurock, co-founder and owner of the Magic Beans baby and toddler gear store, which has locations in Hingham, Brookline and Wellesley, said parents have little reason to worry.

“(The panic) is completely unwarranted,” Gurock said.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, about 1 million Maclaren strollers were sold from 1999 to November 2009. In that time, only 15 people have reported children hurting themselves on the hinges.

“The language of the recall is very scary,” Gurock said. “As a parent you see the word ‘amputation’ and you can’t read anything else, you’re just stuck on that word, but it’s such an unlikely scenario.”

Children’s fingers will be safe if parents and caretakers make sure the strollers are locked into the open position before letting children near them, she said.
Gurock’s stores sell eight of nine recalled models, which range in price from $79.99 for a car seat frame to $379.99 for a double stroller, according to the company’s Web site.

Though the recall was for Maclaren strollers only, Gurock said parents should watch their children’s hands when around any umbrella stroller as well as door hinges and other folding objects.

Magic Beans stores removed Maclaren strollers from display racks after they heard of the recall Monday, Gurock said. On Thursday, after retrofitting all the strollers with plastic hinge covers to protect stray hands, Gurock decided to begin selling the strollers again.
“We sold two Maclaren strollers,” she said. “People are being reasonable about this.”

The Inglesina Zippy is the best standard stroller, especially if easy folding and handling is a priority. Using a special mechanism, the Zippy stroller easily folds with one hand. The seat is fully reclining, so it'ssuitable for newborns. The Italian-designed Inglesina stroller is stylish, though not as modern as some $700 European strollers. The 22.5-pound Zippy has plush, washable seat padding and comes with a universal car-seat adaptor that fits the most popular infant car seats, including the top-rated SnugRide and SafeSeat from Graco. The sun canopy is adjustable, and a rain cover is included. The 2009 Zippy also comes with height-adjustable handles, rear-wheel suspension and one-hand steering. Built to last, stroller reviews say the Zippy is a great choice.
Many strollers claim to be easy to fold, but parents posting to review sites say the Inglesina Zippy stroller actually delivers and can be folded with one hand. The Inglesina Zippy also has the most important features: a fully reclining seat and car seat adapter for infants, plush padding that is removable and washable, a sun canopy and a rain hood. New for the 2009 versions are height-adjustable handles, rear wheel suspension and one-hand steering. For parents on a budget, the Graco Quattro Tour Sport (*Est. $170) gets high marks for features and ease of use, but reviewers say it doesn't offer the same long-term durability.
The most credible professional reviews of the Inglesina Zippy umbrella stroller come from ConsumerReports.org and "Baby Bargains." While Consumer Reports is known for its reputable independent testing, "Baby Bargains" has a more detailed write-up. The best user reviews of the Inglesina Zippy can be found on the parent forums of the book's web companion. There is also a credible report on this stroller at Baby-Gaga.com, where ratings are based on hands-on tests along with parent interviews. Cookie magazine has a balanced write-up backed by parent testing. In addition, we found several dozen owner postings at Amazon.com.

Best Budget Stroller
Graco Quattro Tour Sport

Although heavier than most other top-rated strollers, the 26.5-pound Graco Quattro Tour Sport stroller gets high marks in professional and parent reviews as a good budget stroller. Users generally praise its durability,maneuverability and ease of use. It has a fully reclining seat, rotating canopy, storage basket and cup holder. It is also compatible with the Graco SnugRide and SafeSeat infant car seats. The Quattro Tour may not have the same sophistication found in the other options, but it makes up for this with a far lower price tag.
The Graco Quattro Tour Sport is a full-featured stroller that builds on the success of the similar Quattro Tour Deluxe (*Est. $150). Owner feedback is similar, but professional reviewers give the Sport's updated elliptical frame better scores for maneuverability and ease of use. Parents like the Quattro Tour Sport's reversible sun canopy, storage space, smooth ride and the fact that it reclines fully for newborns. We found several complaints about this stroller's 26.5-pound weight, however. Owners say the Inglesina Zippy (*Est. $350) is easier to fold and steer, and it weighs less, but it costs nearly twice as much.
Both ConsumerReports.org and its British counterpart, Which? magazine, offer independent test-based reviews of the Graco Quattro Tour Sport. Both sources offer impeccable ethics track records and comparative ratings, but only Which? adds a short write-up on each model. "Baby Bargains" doesn't commission laboratory tests, but reviews are based on solid research and consumer feedback. The Sport doesn't get as many user reviews as some other top-rated strollers, but there are a few posts each on Amazon.com and the Baby Bargains discussion forum.

Best Luxury Stroller
Uppababy Vista

Competition is fierce among $700 luxury strollers, but reviewers say the Uppababy Vista offers a good blend of style, practicality, comfort and maneuverability. The Vista is highly configurable and adjustable: It comeswith telescopic handles, a no-kick rear axel, zip-in weather and bug shields, three recline positions, and interchangeable bassinet and stroller seats. There's also an optional second seat (the $130 RumbleSeat) and a running board (the $90 Piggyback) to accommodate friends and siblings, allowing you to extend the functionality of the Vista as a double stroller. Reviewers say the Vista is comfortable for babies and parents and exceptionally maneuverable in urban conditions (it's not an all-terrain stroller).
Among full-featured luxury strollers, reviewers say the Uppababy Vista stands out for practicality and value. Although it's not cheap, it is considerably more affordable than its closest competitors, the Stokke Xplory (*Est. $1,000) and the Bugaboo Cameleon (*Est. $900). As with the Stokke, the Vista allows babies to ride up high, close to mom or dad. The Vista is singled out as an excellent choice for urban parents who want an easy-to-fold stroller that delivers a smooth ride for the baby. Taller parents posting to user review sites say they also like the telescoping handles and no-kick rear axel. The one caveat is that the extra-wide wheel base can be a nuisance in cramped store aisles. The Inglesina Zippy (*Est. $350) is another top-rated, quick-fold stroller with a narrower profile, but with a less cutting-edge look. If you need to accommodate more than one child, the Vista can be equipped with a RumbleSeat (*Est. $130) toddler seat or Piggyback (*Est. $90) running board.
"Baby Bargains" and Cookie magazine have the best coverage of the Uppababy Vista. Neither source conducts controlled independent testing, but both include owner feedback and detailed write-ups. StrollerQueen.com and BabyGizmo.com are more focused on demonstrating features than evaluating performance. BabyGizmo.com's video review does an especially good job of explaining exactly how the Vista works. Owner feedback on the latest model is still sparse, but Buzzillions.com is accumulating a useful number of posts.

First, consider where you live and the local terrain. A stroller that's going to be used on city streets will need different features than one that'll primarily see action in a suburban mall or on well-maintained sidewalks; and a stroller that will be used in a rural area will require yet another set of criteria if it's going to hold up over time. Because where you'll be using your stroller really drives what you need, our book gives an in-depth features list based on locale. Here, a few points to consider if you're a city dweller:

In urban areas, you'll need to scale curbs, maneuver over sidewalk cracks and potholes, and fit between narrow store aisles, juggle your stroller and baby in and out of public transportation, perhaps lug them both up and down flights of stairs, and more. Fans of the high-end Bugaboo Cameleon Stroller say its rugged wheels can take both bumpy sidewalks or off-road terrain. Your stroller should:

• Be super-sturdy. Not only is there the repeated jarring of broken sidewalks and such, there's some serious wear and tear due to the fact that urbanites do a lot of walking. In general, a steel frame will hold up much better than an aluminum one, but it'll be heavier -- not so great if you live in a walk-up apartment building or use public transportation a lot. Your best bet: Find the lightest steel frame stroller that you can.

• Sport rugged wheels. You might consider a stroller that has air-filled tires, which give more easily on rough surfaces (and make for a smoother ride for little passengers). You'll also have an easier time bumping them up and down stairs. The downside is that they do need to be filled; so you might want to look for one that comes with a pump, or consider investing in a small pump.

• Fold compactly. The stroller will need to fit inside the trunk of a taxicab as well as on public transportation. Lots of city moms in our survey swear by their lightweight, compact-fold Maclaren strollers, which come in several styles (click on the comparison chart at maclarenbaby.com to size each one up), ranging in price from around $110 to $250. Another urban fave: The Inglesina Zippy . "We live in downtown Chicago and have limited space. The Zippy folds up smaller than a bag of golf clubs!" raves one of our survey respondents.

• Have ample storage space. Since your stroller will serve as your baby's main means of transportation, make sure there's room in the basket for all his stuff as well as for shopping bags and such. Also check to see that you have easy access to the basket if the seat back is reclined. (This is important wherever you live.)
