A stroller is one of the most frequently used and indispensable items you'll need for baby. These wheeled wonders come in all shapes, sizes, and fabrics, with every feature imaginable. From prams to joggers, travel systems, lightweights, and more, it's no wonder that shopping for a stroller can be overwhelming, especially for the first-time parent.

Before You Buy
Because your stroller will likely be used on a daily basis well through the toddler years, it is important to find one that best suits your needs, keeping in mind that these may shift as baby grows. Naturally, safety and comfort should be high on your priority list, but here are a few more things you should consider:

Your lifestyle If you rely on public transportation, size, weight, and portability are essential factors--test how easy it is to quickly fold the stroller for catching a bus, or negotiating a flight of stairs. If you walk more often than drive, look for a sturdy stroller with good suspension and easy maneuverability. If you're a frequent driver, try a lightweight stroller that stores compactly in your trunk. For athletic and outdoorsy types, a jogger might be perfect.

Space limitations How big is it, folded and unfolded? Will it fit in the trunk or back seat of your car? Will it fit through a standard-size door? Can you take it on a subway or bus?

Stroller weight If a lot of lifting and climbing of stairs is expected, choose a lightweight stroller. Trying to coerce a heavier model up or down stairs isn't safe for you or baby.

Your child's age Only strollers that fully recline are appropriate for babies under 3 months, while a convertible stroller will take you through the toddler years. If you have more than one child, a double stroller is an obvious choice (buy one that fully reclines if you have one or more young infants). For toddlers, a lightweight or umbrella stroller is usually just right.

Your height While your baby's comfort and safety are most important, remember to also consider your height and stride. The stroller should be comfortable for you and any additional caregivers, so look for a model with adjustable handle height if you plan to share pushing responsibilities.

Wheel type Unless you need the additional stability offered by the fixed-position, oversize wheels found on joggers and larger prams, fully independent wheels are recommended. Their casterlike movement allows for better maneuverability in stores, and many models feature a locking device to point the front wheels straight forward for added stability if needed.

Portability Many parents have two strollers for various needs. A full-size stroller is great for longer, bumpier rides, while the ultracompact umbrella fits everywhere from trunks to overhead bins on planes. If you buy only one stroller, keep portability at the top of your list.

Sanity-saving features As with cars, there are many innovative and time-saving stroller features available. Some models offer the beloved one-hand-fold feature; others have all-terrain wheels; others include parent trays. Plan ahead and think about what you can and cannot live without.

Your budget It is possible to find a great stroller without spending a fortune. (It is also possible to find subpar strollers at sky-high prices.) However, more often than not, you get what you pay for. Think carefully about the features you need and then narrow by budget. Your purchase could potentially last from your child's infancy well through the toddler years, so investing in a quality stroller may be more economical in the long run.

Types and Features
Here is a look at basic stroller types and some of the features that may be included with each:

Standard
The most popular among stroller styles, these offer numerous convenience and comfort options. Most standard models are designed with aluminum frames for better maneuverability, rust resistance, durability, and easy maintenance. Even with the aluminum frame, these strollers can weigh between 12 and 24 pounds--keep weight in mind as you test drive.

Ranging from English-style buggies to more rugged models, standard-size strollers are a great all-purpose pick. Many fold easily and compactly, making them great for families on the go. Most are typically convertible--that is, they can be used as a carriage and a stroller, so they grow with baby. Standard-size strollers are appropriate for newborns because they offer a full-recline feature, shock-absorbing suspension system, and oversize wheels for a smooth ride on varying terrain.
Features may include: Multiple-position seat recline and back support; removable weather boot; extra seat padding; removable front tray; storage basket; canopy; reversible handle for conversion to carriage; dual wheel brakes; adjustable footrest; easy-to-use folding mechanism; extendable handle; larger, all-terrain wheels.
Age range: If the stroller reclines fully, it is safe for a newborn. If not, it's appropriate for 4 months to up to 4 years of age.

Lightweight and Umbrella

Travel Systems
One of the most convenient innovations in recent years has been the travel system--a stroller and infant car seat in one. The infant car seat provides head, back, and neck support while keeping baby in a comfortable, reclined position, just like in a carriage. With the stay-in-car base feature, the infant car seat can also be used as a carrier. This allows you to take the car seat from the car to stroller and vice versa without ever disturbing baby. Once baby outgrows the infant car seat, it can be removed, converting the system into a stroller. The stroller's own seating and restraint system is used until your child is approximately 4 years old. These strollers are designed to fold quickly, easily, and compactly for storage and offer features that provide a comfortable ride for everyone.

Joggers
For active parents who want to include baby in their outings, the jogger stroller's unique design may be just the thing. Many are three-wheeled, complete with comfortable seating, a parking brake, a storage basket, and all-terrain wheels. Joggers are made to fold quickly, easily, and compactly, making them great for travel. Most joggers can hold up to 75 pounds, but it's likely your child will outgrow the seat before then. Also keep in mind (with young babies in particular) that while most jogger models are designed for some bumps along the trail, if you are planning on climbing Mount Kilimanjaro or are traveling over rough and rocky terrain, it's probably best to leave baby at home or try a backpack instead.

Serious road runners should look for smooth tires--the bigger, the better. If you will be running on trails, strolling to a soccer game, etc., then knobby tires, with better traction, are suggested. If you live in a wet climate, invest in an aluminum frame and rims that prevent rusting and is more lightweight. While aluminum is typically more expensive, you'll find that it pays in the long run.

Age range: Most pediatricians recommend waiting until your baby is approximately 6 months of age. Depending on its size, you can use this type of stroller well into the toddler years.

Double and Triple
If you're the parent of multiples or have an infant and toddler in your household, walking them by yourself may sound next to impossible... unless you have a stroller made especially for more than one child. Double and triple strollers offer the convenience of walking multiple children at the same time as comfortably as if you were walking just one. There are two types of double strollers:
1. Tandem (Infants face forward, one in back of the other.) These strollers fold easily and compactly for storage or travel and are a good choice for maneuverability. Beware the "front seat" issue, though, and look for a model that gives the back seat a "boost" so both babies can enjoy the view. The front-to-back style is best if you have an older child and a newborn.

2. Side-by-Side (Infants sit next to each other)

The side-by-side style is most commonly used by parents of twins (or two children of comparable weight).

When a high-end baby stroller company recalled about one million strollers Monday after reports children’s fingers were being amputated on the hinges, some parents panicked, and at least one personal-injury lawyer started looking for clients.

Maclaren USA, Inc., a popular British baby buggy company whose strollers typically retail for more than $125, issued a voluntary recall of nine models after receiving 12 reports of children amputating their fingertips on stroller hinges while caretakers were folding or unfolding the strollers.

Even The Law Offices of James Sokolove, known for ubiquitous TV and radio ads offering support to mishap and accident victims, offered victims of stroller-related injuries legal assistance through its Web site and by advertising on Google.

But Sheri Gurock, co-founder and owner of the Magic Beans baby and toddler gear store, which has locations in Hingham, Brookline and Wellesley, said parents have little reason to worry.

“(The panic) is completely unwarranted,” Gurock said.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, about 1 million Maclaren strollers were sold from 1999 to November 2009. In that time, only 15 people have reported children hurting themselves on the hinges.

“The language of the recall is very scary,” Gurock said. “As a parent you see the word ‘amputation’ and you can’t read anything else, you’re just stuck on that word, but it’s such an unlikely scenario.”

Children’s fingers will be safe if parents and caretakers make sure the strollers are locked into the open position before letting children near them, she said.
Gurock’s stores sell eight of nine recalled models, which range in price from $79.99 for a car seat frame to $379.99 for a double stroller, according to the company’s Web site.

Though the recall was for Maclaren strollers only, Gurock said parents should watch their children’s hands when around any umbrella stroller as well as door hinges and other folding objects.

Magic Beans stores removed Maclaren strollers from display racks after they heard of the recall Monday, Gurock said. On Thursday, after retrofitting all the strollers with plastic hinge covers to protect stray hands, Gurock decided to begin selling the strollers again.
“We sold two Maclaren strollers,” she said. “People are being reasonable about this.”

THE FACTS:
How kids get hurt: When caretakers do not ensure the strollers are locked in the open position before placing their children in them, kids can poke their fingers into the hinges and get hurt when the caretaker pushes the stroller down to lock it.

The Maxi-Cosi Loola Stroller (MSRP $430) is a reversible seat stroller with a telescopic 3-D compact fold, adjustable handles, a generous sun canopy and a large shopping basket.

The Dorel Juvenile Group USA recently brought it to the US from Europe, where it was sold under their Bébé Confort brand.

Want to use it as a travel system? Just take off the seat and attach the Maxi-Cosi Mico Infant Car Seat (sold separately).

Putting It Together
The chassis comes with the wheels attached and the seat comes folded accordion-style. Open the seat by pulling the sides outward. Undo the shoulder straps and put the seat pad on, then re-feed the straps into their correct position and snap on the seat pad. To finish putting it together, attach the sun canopy and child bumper bar.
The Loola comes in three colors: Oxygen Red, Oxygen Black, and Choco Mint, which has a reversible seat pad (chocolate brown and mint stripes on one side, solid chocolate brown on the other).

The Ride
The Loola is a very smooth ride, due to a spring-loaded suspension. You can steer it one-handed and there are three handle position: facing up, downwards and inward. The wheels can be used in either a swivel or fixed wheel setting. To use the Loola into a swivel wheel position, click the swivel locks upward; to use it in the locked wheel position, push the swivel locks downward until you hear a click. When compared to similar strollers, the suspension of the Loola is outstanding.

The Seat
The seat is recommended for children over 6-months-old and has a 5-point padded harness. The weight limit is 50 lbs. The seat is very padded and there are four recline positions. Even in its most upright setting, the Loola’s seat is slightly reclined. The Loola is very sturdy; no matter what I hung off the handlebars, this stroller did not tip in the least.

Storage
The storage basket is a great size. If the seat is forward-facing, access it from the back. If the seat is rear-facing, access it from the front.

Sun/Weather Exposure
I was pleased with the sun canopy. There is a dark mesh window so you can see your child (but the sun stays shaded) and the canopy goes down pretty far. The rain cover is included and zips onto the sun canopy.

The Fold
The fold is pretty simple and compact. If you are folding the stroller with the seat forward-facing: first, lock the wheels in the fixed/straight position, then press the buttons on both sides of the handles and push the handles down, pull the fold release handle (above the basket) upward. Then push the handles down until you engage the fold lock (the lock on the left side). If you are folding the stroller with the seat rear-facing, fully recline the seat, so you can access the fold release handle and pull it upwards. To make it more compact, take the seat off first and fold the chassis the exact same way you folded the whole stroller. Then fold the seat into itself (accordion-style).

To unfold: First, unlock the fold lock on the left side of the stroller. Then stand behind the stroller and push the foot pedal down while pulling the handles upwards. Push down on the handles to make sure the stroller is locked open.
Parents will like that the Loola can stand folded.

Accessories
Adapters for the Maxi-Cosi Mico Infant Seat and rain cover are included.
Parking Brake
Push down the red pedal to engage the brake. Push down on the blue pedal to release it.

Pros: The seat is reversible, it will take the Maxi-Cosi Mico Infant Car Seat, seat, has heavy duty shock absorbers, adjustable handlebars and a compact fold.

Cons: At 26 lbs, it’s not a lightweight ride.

Strollers can be a parent's best friend, but choosing the wrong baby stroller could spell trouble and inconvenience. How can parents choose the right baby stroller from the many available in stores and via the Internet? Strollers are available to match just about any lifestyle, so think about how you want to use the stroller first and then look at strollers that best fit your life and your baby.

Safety Features Are Important For Strollers
As always, baby's safety is the biggest concern. Check strollers for stability before buying, and don't forget to see if the stroller will remain upright with a diaper bag hanging over the handles! Also check the stroller harness. A five-point harness is best, especially for infants or babies who are in the stroller a lot. For occasional mall trips, a three-point harness might be OK. Look for pinch points and sharp corners, too.

Stroller Wheels and Handles
Walk your favorite strollers through the store before making a purchase. Check the height of the handles to be sure they are comfortable for you. Taller parents should look for strollers with adjustable handle heights so they don't have to stoop. Choose a stroller that makes corners smoothly, especially if you'll use it in crowded places. Circo Booster Seats from Target
About 43,000 of these booster seats are being recalled because the strap can pop open unexpectedly causing a fall hazard. Manufacture date codes are located on the back of the seat and include these numbers: XJ0811, XJ0812, XJ0901, and XJ0902. Return the seat to Target for a full refund.

Safety 1st Stair Gates (Round 2)
About 100,000 of these stair gates were recalled back in Feb. 2009. There are hinges that can break and cause a fall hazard -- something you definitely don't want from a gate used at the top of the stairs. Now another 30,000 plus are being recalled (same model: 42111) for the same reason. You can visit the company's site for a free repair kit or call 866-690-2540.

Baby Hammocks (Round 2)
These baby hammocks are branded as La Siesta Yayita Baby Hammocks or just Yayita Baby Hammocks and were previously recalled in Aug. 2008. This update includes two new places of purchase: Kaplan Early Learning and Nova Natural Toys and Crafts. The hammock can flip over causing a fall hazard or a strangulation hazard if a baby gets hung up in the seat's straps. Kaplan (800-334-2014) is offering a credit toward another purchase and Nova Naturals (877-668-2111) is offering a free replacement hammock.

Graco Jump 'n Jive Doorway Jumpers
The jumper (model: 1755544) isn't actually the problem in this recall, but rather it's the attached toys. These toys are attached to the jumper with strips of fabric that can detach and pose a choking hazard. If you have this toy, remove the toys along with the fabric strips and give Graco a call at 800-345-4109 to get a replacement set of toys. You can also visit their site to order the new toys. Once these toys are removed the jumper is safe to use again.

1. Using a hand-me-down without checking its history. A stroller purchased years ago for an older child might have since been recalled. Before you dust it off for reuse, check with the manufacturer or the Consumer Product Safety Commission for product alerts. Even if it hasn’t been recalled, there are other reasons you might want to consider buying a brand-new set of wheels. Stroller safety standards are regularly reviewed, so newer models might be a better bet. They might also have new features that make them easier to use.

2. Failing to make sure the stroller is fully locked into its “open” position before strapping in your child. It’s easy to skip this step when you’re in a rush, and some strollers require force and effort to make sure they lock. Make it a point to listen for that all-important click every time, or the stroller might fold in--with your child in it.

3. Forgetting to buckle up your child, even if you’re just wheeling him or her up the block, or going slowly. You never know when you could hit a bump that could cause a nasty tumble, so make sure your little one is properly strapped in.

4. Treating your stroller like a shopping cart. Parents often toss a shopping bag or purse around the handles, but if the stroller wasn’t designed to carry that extra weight it could tip over. Having a basket or storage area under the stroller helps, but be sure to check the directions for weight limits before you stash items there.

5. Failing to brake. It only takes a slight incline to send the stroller rolling away from you. Put your foot on the brake when you take your hands off the stroller, even if you’re stopping for just a moment.
