Baby slings are the subject of concern on the part of the Consumer Product safety Commission and child safety advocates. (AP)
The Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a warning Friday that baby slings -- which parents put around their necks to carry their babies -- may pose a risk of suffocation.

In researching incident reports from the past 20 years, the CPSC identified and is investigating at least 14 deaths associated with sling-style infant carriers, including three in 2009. Twelve of the deaths involved babies younger than four months of age.

Don Mays, of Consumer Reports, explains that the potential hazards of putting small babies -- especially newborns -- into bag-style slings arise because, "A very young infant's head will be folded forward. That cuts off the airway, and they essentially suffocate. Another problem could be if the baby's head could be nestled up against the carrier's body."

The CPSC said many of the babies who died in slings were either a low birth weight twin, were born prematurely, or had breathing issues such as a cold. Therefore, it urged parents of preemies, twins, babies in fragile health and those with low weight to use extra care and consult their pediatricians about using slings.

Between 2006 and 2008, sales for soft infant carriers rose 43 percent, to more than $21 million, reports CBS News Correspondent Elaine Quijano, but there are no federal safety standards covering sling-type carriers.

"Don't use slings at all," Mays recommends. "There are safer ways of carrying your baby than in a sling."

A lesson that will always haunt Lisa Cochran, whose week-old infant, Derrik, suddenly stopped breathing as he rested quietly against her in May in a bag-style sling, made by Infantino. He died.

"(Such devices were) highly recommended -- especially for breast-feeding mothers and mothers in general. … (They) kept (the infants) close to your heart, so they could hear your heart beat."

Cochran, of Keizer, Ore., and who is pregnant again, says, "I, as a first-time mom, had no clue I could walk into a store and pick something off the shelf that wasn't safe."

She is suing the Infantino, which issued a statement to CBS News saying, "While Infantino believes that its Slingrider baby sling is a safe product, the company is working with the CPSC to address the agency's concerns and those of any parents and caregivers."

While Friday's CPSC warning will address the suffocation danger, Consumer Reports says at least 37 other children have suffered serious injuries, including skull fractures, while being carried in or falling out of baby slings. That led to a recall in 2007.

Nancy Cowles, executive director of Kids in Danger, a non-profit group working on product safety issues, told co-anchor Erica Hill the CPSC needs to "look closely" at the carriers in which the deaths occurred to see if "there does need to be a specific recall of specific products, but the warning, additional instructions and a standard, frankly, for these products is what's needed to make sure that … when you go to the store to buy something, you know that someone has already made sure that it's going to be safe for your child."

"It should be noted that women have been using slings for centuries safely to carry their babies. Obviously, the ones involved in the deaths, I think people should wait to hear the CPSC's warning to see if there's anymore specific information. But with these products, you need to make sure you're using one that's been recommended to you, that they have adequate safety information, either on their Web site or that comes with the product, and that you check with someone and that you see what your baby's position is in it at all times, not just when you first put them in it, to make sure that it's going to be something that will keep them in a safe position."

Cowles suggested that parents discuss slings with their doctors, but it "certainly would not hurt to wait" to use them until a baby is several weeks old and has more control of his or her head.

Before You Buy
Because your stroller will likely be used on a daily basis well through the toddler years, it is important to find one that best suits your needs, keeping in mind that these may shift as baby grows. Naturally, safety and comfort should be high on your priority list, but here are a few more things you should consider:

Your lifestyle If you rely on public transportation, size, weight, and portability are essential factors--test how easy it is to quickly fold the stroller for catching a bus, or negotiating a flight of stairs. If you walk more often than drive, look for a sturdy stroller with good suspension and easy maneuverability. If you're a frequent driver, try a lightweight stroller that stores compactly in your trunk. For athletic and outdoorsy types, a jogger might be perfect.

Space limitations How big is it, folded and unfolded? Will it fit in the trunk or back seat of your car? Will it fit through a standard-size door? Can you take it on a subway or bus?

Stroller weight If a lot of lifting and climbing of stairs is expected, choose a lightweight stroller. Trying to coerce a heavier model up or down stairs isn't safe for you or baby.

Your child's age Only strollers that fully recline are appropriate for babies under 3 months, while a convertible stroller will take you through the toddler years. If you have more than one child, a double stroller is an obvious choice (buy one that fully reclines if you have one or more young infants). For toddlers, a lightweight or umbrella stroller is usually just right.

Age range: If the stroller reclines fully, it is safe for a newborn. If not, it's appropriate for 4 months to up to 4 years of age.

Lightweight and Umbrella

Umbrella strollers are available in a wide range of prices according to the features offered and will last you well into the early preschool years (3 to 4).
Features may include: Aluminum frames; semi-reclining seat; canopy; one-step fold; locking swivel wheels; super-light body weight.
Age range: If the lightweight stroller reclines fully, it is safe for a newborn. Most umbrella strollers do not fully recline or have suspension features, so it is best to wait until baby is at least 4 to 6 months old before using.

Travel Systems
One of the most convenient innovations in recent years has been the travel system--a stroller and infant car seat in one. The infant car seat provides head, back, and neck support while keeping baby in a comfortable, reclined position, just like in a carriage. With the stay-in-car base feature, the infant car seat can also be used as a carrier. This allows you to take the car seat from the car to stroller and vice versa without ever disturbing baby. Once baby outgrows the infant car seat, it can be removed, converting the system into a stroller. The stroller's own seating and restraint system is used until your child is approximately 4 years old. These strollers are designed to fold quickly, easily, and compactly for storage and offer features that provide a comfortable ride for everyone.
Stroller features may include: Child play tray; parent cup holder; three-point or five-point harness system (not overhead); removable, washable pad; all-terrain, swivel wheels; brakes that set with a foot lever; seat recline; storage basket.
Infant car seat features may include: Canopy; level indicator; ergonomically designed handle; head cushion; stay-in-car base.
Age range: Newborn (for car seat) to toddler (stroller).

Joggers
For active parents who want to include baby in their outings, the jogger stroller's unique design may be just the thing. Many are three-wheeled, complete with comfortable seating, a parking brake, a storage basket, and all-terrain wheels. Joggers are made to fold quickly, easily, and compactly, making them great for travel. Most joggers can hold up to 75 pounds, but it's likely your child will outgrow the seat before then. Also keep in mind (with young babies in particular) that while most jogger models are designed for some bumps along the trail, if you are planning on climbing Mount Kilimanjaro or are traveling over rough and rocky terrain, it's probably best to leave baby at home or try a backpack instead.

Serious road runners should look for smooth tires--the bigger, the better. If you will be running on trails, strolling to a soccer game, etc., then knobby tires, with better traction, are suggested. If you live in a wet climate, invest in an aluminum frame and rims that prevent rusting and is more lightweight. While aluminum is typically more expensive, you'll find that it pays in the long run.
Features may include: All-terrain wheels; wrist strap; hand brake; durable, weatherproof fabric; sturdy construction; adjustable handlebar height; better suspension; storage pouch.
Age range: Most pediatricians recommend waiting until your baby is approximately 6 months of age. Depending on its size, you can use this type of stroller well into the toddler years.

Double and Triple
If you're the parent of multiples or have an infant and toddler in your household, walking them by yourself may sound next to impossible... unless you have a stroller made especially for more than one child. Double and triple strollers offer the convenience of walking multiple children at the same time as comfortably as if you were walking just one. These remain convenient for carrying a child and groceries once one child has outgrown it. These models are available in a wide variety of fabrics and features.

There are two types of double strollers:

The side-by-side style is most commonly used by parents of twins (or two children of comparable weight).

The Grand Tour LX has all of the fluidity of a typical high-end stroller. It’s easy (and, I’ll admit, fun!) to push, has an adjustable handle and it navigates sidewalks and store aisles with ease. It has puncture-proof wheels which I initially worried would sacrifice the quality of the ride but I was pleased to discover that the full suspension more than compensated. And I love the easy-to-use foot-operated brake, as well.

This is perhaps the most striking feature of the Grand Tour LX: You can fold it and un-fold it in a flash. When folded, it stands upright for easy storage and quick access when needed. It’s compact but sturdy and will fit easily in the trunk of a car or tucked behind the front door at home. It’s no umbrella stroller size-wise, to be sure, but it’s still easy to pack and store.

Okay, get ready for it. This stroller comes with almost everything you could ever possibly need in a stroller (and some things you may have never dreamed of!). In addition to things like a cup-holder, rain cover, bug cover, baby carrycot, reflective accents and the famous Maclaren lifetime warranty, the Grand Tour LX also has built-in headlights (seriously), with multiple visibility settings (constant, flashing, colored) which mom or dad can control with a remote control (seriously… again). The remote mounts on the handlebar console which flips open to feature a clock and thermometer. Now it appears another infant product maker, Dorel Juvenile Group, Inc., is facing a similar recall. According to the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA), the infant car carrier seats have a faulty child restraint handle. The restraint handle can come off, posing the risk of serious injury to a child. So far one head injury and several minor injuries to children have been reported.
The infant car seats were made by Dorel Juvenile Group Inc. and distributed by the national retailers; Eddie Bauer, Disney, Costco and Safety 1st. The models effected by the recall include: the Sojourn Travel System, Eurostar Travel System, Lite Wave Travel System, Vector Travel System (all sold by Safety 1st,) the Sprint Travel System sold by Costco, the Disney Propack Travel System sold by Disney, the Eddie Bauer Adventurer Travel System, and the Eddie Bauer Endeavor Travel System sold by Eddie Bauer.

A defective car seat can be dangerous, even deadly, for a child. If the car seat were to fail during a car accident that child would be unprotected and would sustain serious damages.

"The CPSC urges parents and caregivers to immediately stop using the recalled cribs, wait for the free repair kit, and do not attempt to fix the cribs without the kit," the agency said in a statement. "The cribs' drop-side plastic hardware can break, deform or parts can become missing."

"When the drop-side detaches, it creates space between the drop-side and the crib mattress. The bodies of infants and toddlers can become entrapped in the space, which can lead to suffocation."

The cribs were distributed in the U.S. and Canada. Some have the Fisher-Price logo instead of Stork Craft, the Canada-based company said. More info is available at storkcraft.com.

When a high-end baby stroller company recalled about one million strollers Monday after reports children’s fingers were being amputated on the hinges, some parents panicked, and at least one personal-injury lawyer started looking for clients.

Maclaren USA, Inc., a popular British baby buggy company whose strollers typically retail for more than $125, issued a voluntary recall of nine models after receiving 12 reports of children amputating their fingertips on stroller hinges while caretakers were folding or unfolding the strollers.

Even The Law Offices of James Sokolove, known for ubiquitous TV and radio ads offering support to mishap and accident victims, offered victims of stroller-related injuries legal assistance through its Web site and by advertising on Google.

But Sheri Gurock, co-founder and owner of the Magic Beans baby and toddler gear store, which has locations in Hingham, Brookline and Wellesley, said parents have little reason to worry.

“(The panic) is completely unwarranted,” Gurock said.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, about 1 million Maclaren strollers were sold from 1999 to November 2009. In that time, only 15 people have reported children hurting themselves on the hinges.

“The language of the recall is very scary,” Gurock said. “As a parent you see the word ‘amputation’ and you can’t read anything else, you’re just stuck on that word, but it’s such an unlikely scenario.”

Children’s fingers will be safe if parents and caretakers make sure the strollers are locked into the open position before letting children near them, she said.
Gurock’s stores sell eight of nine recalled models, which range in price from $79.99 for a car seat frame to $379.99 for a double stroller, according to the company’s Web site.

Though the recall was for Maclaren strollers only, Gurock said parents should watch their children’s hands when around any umbrella stroller as well as door hinges and other folding objects.

Magic Beans stores removed Maclaren strollers from display racks after they heard of the recall Monday, Gurock said. On Thursday, after retrofitting all the strollers with plastic hinge covers to protect stray hands, Gurock decided to begin selling the strollers again.
“We sold two Maclaren strollers,” she said. “People are being reasonable about this.”
